Arriving six years after Casio first introduced its slimmer-than-slim Exilim line, the 10-megapixel EX-S10 launched as the “thinnest 10-megapixel” digital camera on the market. For those of you who want a carry-anywhere point-and-shoot camera, that’s a good thing. While an ultracompact–and fashionable–design is not quite enough to make the S10 a star these days, especially considering its modest 36-108mm (35mm equivalent) 3x zoom lens, this little camera has a few tricks up its sleeve and it’s fun to use.

I was pretty excited when I found out I would be reviewing the Casio Exilim S10, “the world’s smallest and thinnest 10.1 megapixel camera.” The camera I currently own is far from being the smallest or thinnest any-megapixel camera, and definitely lacks in the style department. Besides being the “smallest and thinnest 10.1 megapixel model,” the S10 is also equipped with a 3x optical zoom lens, 2.7-inch wide Super Clear LCD, Auto Shutter, face detection and iTunes-compatible H.264 video. The S10 also has Best Shot, a series of 36 scene presets including YouTube capture, pre-record, anti shake, fireworks, and more.

I’m a digital photography junkie although I may not post here so often. I’ve always kept a well rounded portfolio of gadgets around including my Canon Rebel XT, a Sony HDR-SR7 HD video camcorder, and until now, I always used my Canon ELPH SD100 as my goto “pocket” camera that also did lightweight video recording just as many other consumer cameras do today. The SD100 had served quite a useful life and was an outstanding performer in all areas. However, a couple things were starting to create a need for an upgrade. First, the ELPH SD100 was the smallest, viable camera on the market when it came out but today, there were increasingly more “slim” and lightweight options being introduced on the market.

Promoted as the world’s smallest and thinnest 10 megapixel digital camera, the Casio S10 has a 3x optical zoom lens with a 36 to 108mm equivalent focal length coupled to a 1/2.3 inch CCD. The S10′s stylish body, measuring just 94.2mm wide, 54.6mm high and 15.0mm thin (13.8mm at the thinnest part) is the product of Casio’s relentless pursuit of thinness.
